Chang’e-6 is planned to explore the landing site for several days. Soil samples will be taken both from the surface with a special scoop and from a depth of up to two metres with a drill. In total, about 2 kilograms of rock should be collected.

The samples will then be placed in a capsule that will be sent to the Moon’s orbit, where a return module is waiting for it. It will deliver the soil to Earth for research. Previously, a similar operation was carried out by the Chang’e-5 mission, but with rock delivered from the visible side of the Moon.
